LONDON- British Airways (BA) has reversed controversial uniform and conduct rules after strong backlash from unions representing its pilots and cabin crew. The airline, headquartered near London Heathrow (LHR), had attempted to ban public coffee drinking and restrict uniform use, sparking widespread criticism.

Just days after issuing the new appearance guidelines, the carrier backed down. Unions argued the policies were impractical and unfair, particularly during long duty days that often exceed 12 hours.

British Airways Reverses Coffee Ban

The original guidelines instructed crew to only consume food or drinks, other than water, inside staff-only restrooms or cafeterias, away from public view.

Water was to be consumed “discreetly.” This implied that crew could not eat or drink in public airport areas, a restriction unions immediately rejected.

Pilots and flight attendants pointed out that during duty, access to designated break rooms is rare once check-in is complete. With long shifts and limited opportunities for proper rest, the rules were seen as both unrealistic and unnecessarily harsh.

British Airways clarified in an internal memo that eating and drinking were not banned outright. However, the wording had caused confusion and “given the impression” of a strict prohibition.

The airline later confirmed that crew may sit in cafes or gate areas during breaks, but eating or drinking while walking through terminals is still discouraged, PYOK exclusively reported

The Uniform and Commuting Controversy

Another disputed change involved uniform policies for commuting and deadheading crew. The airline initially sought to prevent staff from wearing uniforms unless actively working on a flight.

Commuting refers to crew traveling to their base city, often using discounted or reciprocal tickets, while deadheading involves crew traveling as passengers to another destination as part of an assigned duty schedule.

Although regulators already require crew to remove identifiable uniform items when off duty, British Airways claimed this conflicted with its branding standards. The airline’s solution was to ban commuting and deadheading staff from wearing uniforms entirely.

Unions criticized this as impractical. Crew often need to move quickly between flights or lack changing facilities, making uniform wear the most efficient option. After pressure, the airline lifted the ban temporarily while seeking a compromise.

Why Standards Still Matter

British Airways introduced these rules to reinforce appearance standards, which management argued had slipped since the COVID-19 pandemic. Airlines globally have faced similar challenges, with service consistency and presentation impacted by a rapid influx of new staff.

For comparison, Emirates has faced its own criticism about service quality, while competitors like Virgin Atlantic have relaxed rules, allowing tattoos to be visible. British Airways, however, has held firm on its strict policies around body art and grooming.

Maintaining professional standards is critical to brand image, but industry observers note that rules must adapt to modern working conditions. Excessive restrictions risk alienating employees and creating more negative publicity than positive outcomes.

A Lesson in Balance

The backlash highlights the tension airlines face between preserving tradition and adapting to workforce realities. British Airways sought to protect its image, but poorly communicated rules led to confusion and frustration among frontline staff.

By retracting the coffee ban and reconsidering uniform restrictions, the airline has acknowledged the need for policies that are both practical and respectful of its employees’ day-to-day challenges.

The incident underlines the importance of collaboration with unions before implementing major workplace changes.
