CATANIA— A US traveler claims Delta Air Lines (DL) canceled her return flights from Catania Airport (CTA), Sicily, to Nashville International Airport (BNA) via New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), leaving her stranded without compensation on July 16, 2025. The airline, headquartered in Atlanta, has also allegedly refused to provide a full refund for her unexpected expenses.

The woman, Carmen Sansone, took to social media after her attempts to recover approximately $1,600 from Delta Air Lines were denied. Her ordeal started at Catania Airport (CTA), where her initial flight to the U.S. was abruptly canceled without prior notice, brobible reported.

Delta Passenger Stranded in Sicily

Sansone was checking her bag in at Catania Airport (CTA) when a Delta agent informed her that her flight DL245 to New York (JFK) was canceled. She claims there was no prior notification or compensation offered at the time.

Although she was rebooked for a flight the following day, she had to spend €190 ($205) on a taxi to a hotel nearly an hour away, along with additional costs for meals.

The next morning, she returned to the airport via another €185 ($200) taxi. After boarding, her flight reportedly remained on the tarmac for two hours, causing her to miss the connecting flight from New York (JFK) to Nashville (BNA).

Upon arrival in New York, Sansone waited in the Delta Sky Club lounge, which cost her $60, during the extended layover. However, while waiting, she received an email stating that her connecting flight to Nashville (BNA) was canceled without explanation.

Sansone, now awake for over 24 hours, described feeling helpless and frustrated. She paid for another hotel stay and purchased clothes through Instacart as her checked bags remained with Delta.

She finally boarded a rescheduled flight to Nashville (BNA) the next day, concluding her taxing journey back to the U.S.

Legal Rights Under EU Law

Once home, Sansone submitted all her receipts to Delta Air Lines, seeking reimbursement for the expenses incurred during her forced delays and rerouting. Delta reportedly approved reimbursement for only one taxi ride, denying the rest of her claims.

According to Sansone, the airline still owes her $1,073.39 in personal expenses, in addition to around $600 in mandatory compensation under European Union regulations for canceled flights originating within the EU.

EU Regulation 261/2004 mandates that airlines compensate passengers up to €600 (~$650) for flight cancellations within certain parameters, including last-minute notices without alternative arrangements. Sansone insists Delta is legally obligated to honor this compensation.

Public Reaction and Escalation Efforts

Sansone’s TikTok video detailing the experience has garnered nearly 165,000 views and over 900 comments.

Many commenters recommended that she escalate the issue through official channels, such as filing complaints with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Some viewers advised disputing the payment via her credit card provider under the claim of services not rendered, while others suggested leveraging social platforms like LinkedIn to draw corporate attention.

Sansone confirmed she was exploring these options and publicly declared her intention to continue pressing Delta for the full compensation she believes is owed.

As of now, Delta Air Lines (DL) has not publicly responded to inquiries regarding Sansone’s claims.
