Green Party leader Zack Polanski has confirmed he is actively discussing potential defections with Labour MPs. The self-described "eco-populist" told The News Agents podcast he talks to Labour MPs regularly and is specifically "talking to Labour MPs about defections."
He declined to name which MPs or reveal how many are involved in these conversations. When pressed for details, Polanski said: "I feel like the indiscretion is there and I'm going to just leave it there."
Membership surge continues
Polanski's party has experienced dramatic growth since he took leadership at the beginning of September. Membership has surged by 70 per cent to more than 115,000 members, positioning the Greens to potentially overtake the Conservatives in membership size.
The Green leader vowed to "replace" the Labour Government when he assumed control of the party last month. He declared that membership numbers demonstrate the party has "clearly got the energy and momentum anyway."
Leftward political shift
The Green Party has moved significantly leftward under Polanski's leadership following his landslide victory in the leadership election. He has signalled openness to working with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana's new left-wing movement, currently known as Your Party.
Polanski said he would "absolutely" welcome them to his party, though he cautioned that such decisions are "up to the party." He added that the Greens are "not in a place where we need defections from MPs" because they already have sufficient momentum.
Electoral polling breakthrough
Recent polling suggests the Greens could pose a significant electoral threat to Labour. A Find Out Now poll of 2,705 Britons conducted on 15 October showed both Labour and the Greens tied at 15 per cent of the vote.
The poll placed Reform UK in the lead with 32 per cent, followed by the Conservatives on 17 per cent and the Liberal Democrats on 12 per cent. Polanski declared that "British politics is changing" and claimed the Greens are "giving Britain hope again."
