MADRID- Flag Carrier of Spain, Iberia Airlines (IB), has unveiled its comprehensive ‘Plan de Vuelo 2030.’ It is a landmark move that shows the airline’s ambition to become a dominant transatlantic player. It is a long-term strategy centered around network expansion and fleet renewal.

The airline announced the plan on June 18, 2025. Iberia plans a colossal €6 billion investment and includes several key upgrades across the airline’s operations. The most notable is the introduction of new long-haul routes to Monterrey (Mexico), Philadelphia (USA), and Toronto (Canada).

With the new routes announced, Iberia continues to strengthen the Madrid-Barajas Airport as its core hub for transatlantic operations. These three cities — Toronto, Philadelphia, and Monterrey represent fast-growing markets. These cities have strong ties to Spain in terms of business, culture, and tourism.

These routes are part of a larger transatlantic growth strategy of the airline, which is already in motion. Iberia plans to have connections to cities like Orlando, Fortaleza, and Recife. The airline has these destinations in the pipeline for the near future.

Iberia’s network map now has a significant uptick in North and South American flights. The airline expansion shows not just point-to-point expansion but a boost in connectivity across the entire IAG (International Airlines Group) family.

Iberia Fleet Expansion Plans

A major pillar of the ‘Flight plan 2030’ initiative is fleet expansion and renewal. Iberia plans to grow its long-haul fleet from 45 to 70 aircraft by 2030.

Iberia will be inducting Airbus A350s, A330neos, and A321XLRs. These aircraft have a high range and are highly fuel-efficient. This will allow Iberia to serve thinner routes or secondary markets like Monterrey without compromising profitability or passenger comfort.

Short- and medium-haul operations won’t be left behind — a full renewal of Iberia’s narrow-body fleet is also part of the agenda, further improving the airline’s punctuality, sustainability, and onboard experience across all routes.

This plan isn’t just about flying to more destinations. Iberia is placing a big bet on customer experience and operational efficiency. The airline will renovate 100% of its long-haul cabins, introducing new seating. The cabins will feature upgraded in-flight entertainment and an emphasis on comfort.

A new premium lounge is also coming to Terminal 4 at Madrid-Barajas. The airline plans to provide a smoother and more luxurious travel experience for business and frequent flyers.

Iberia is embracing digital transformation, investing in AI-powered systems to streamline operations and improve the booking, boarding, and customer service journey. This includes predictive maintenance for aircraft, real-time rebooking tools, and smarter pricing algorithms.

The most ambitious infrastructure piece is the construction of ‘Ciudad Iberia’ in La Muñoza. It will be Iberia’s aviation and innovation campus that will house Iberia’s new corporate headquarters as well as its training, maintenance, and R&D centers.

The airline estimates it will create 1,000 new direct jobs per year and will support up to 250,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs across Spain. Its economic contribution to Spain’s GDP is expected to increase to €19 billion annually, up 42% from current levels — a clear indication of the scale and seriousness behind this plan.

Iberia will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2027. The creation of the Iberia Foundation, set to launch in time for the centennial, aims to solidify the airline’s social and environmental commitments.
