SYDNEY- Qantas Airways (QF), Australia’s flagship carrier, launches its Airbus A321XLR fleet with inaugural commercial flights. The airline deploys two aircraft on key domestic routes, marking a milestone in regional aviation innovation.

Qantas (QF) initiates commercial operations with its first two Airbus A321XLR aircraft on September 25, 2025.
Named ‘Great Ocean Road’ (VH-OGA) and ‘Outback Way’ (VH-OGB), the planes depart from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). ‘Great Ocean Road’ flies the Sydney (SYD)-Melbourne (MEL) route, while ‘Outback Way’ heads to Perth Airport (PER).
This debut underscores Qantas’s commitment to modernizing its fleet for sustainable growth.
The A321XLR stands out with a wider cabin, taller ceilings, and larger windows compared to prior narrowbody models. Seats offer more space, and passengers can access fast, complimentary Wi-Fi.
Luggage capacity rises by 60 percent over Qantas’s Boeing 737s, easing travel logistics. Fuel efficiency improves, cutting emissions per seat on comparable routes versus the 737-800 it replaces.
Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson highlights the aircraft’s role in fleet renewal. She notes that over 350 training flights and 40,000 hours of preparation ensure seamless integration.
This effort deploys thousands of equipment pieces network-wide. Hudson emphasizes how the A321XLR elevates customer satisfaction, building on gains from recent A220 introductions.
The jet’s range extends to 8,700 kilometers, 3,000 kilometers beyond the 737-800. This capability unlocks direct flights to Southeast Asian destinations previously unfeasible with current narrowbodies.
It supports both domestic links and short-haul international services, fostering economic ties.

Qantas plans swift growth for its A321XLR lineup. The third aircraft arrives in November 2025, with the fleet reaching seven by June 2026.
In August 2025, the airline orders 20 more units, including lie-flat Business seats on 16 for transcontinental and medium-haul routes. This elevates the total order to 48 aircraft.
This expansion forms the core of Qantas Group’s largest fleet renewal, valued at over 200 firm orders from Airbus and Boeing.
Options provide flexibility for demand shifts. The initiative prioritizes efficiency and passenger experience amid rising travel volumes.

Each Qantas A321XLR measures five meters longer than the 737-800 and seats 197 passengers: 20 in Business and 177 in Economy.
This yields a 13 percent capacity increase without shrinking seat pitch, plus a 66 percent Business seat expansion. Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM geared turbofan engines power the aircraft.
Advanced lightweight materials and design reduce fuel burn and emissions per seat on similar sectors. The model integrates next-generation technologies for quieter operations and lower environmental impact.
