LONDON– Consumer group surveyed over 6,000 passengers to evaluate UK airports across 10 key areas.

Categories included customer service, baggage handling times, security queues, seating availability, and the quality of shops and restaurants. The results reveal a stark contrast between small regional airports and larger international hubs.

Manchester Airport Ranked Lowest

Manchester Airport (MAN) once again ranked poorly, with Terminal 3 receiving the lowest score. Some passengers noted shorter queues and helpful staff, but overall satisfaction remained below average.

Manchester Airport Terminal Customer Score (%) Key Issues Status/Notes
Terminal 3 43% Long security queues, insufficient seating, overpriced shops, and food outlets Rated lowest in the UK
Terminal 1 47% Low cleanliness, high prices in shops and outlets Scheduled for closure this year
Terminal 2 53% Mixed response; shorter queues, better staff, but overall satisfaction below average Some positive passenger feedback on efficiency

A frequent flyer remarked that with Ryanair (FR) operating a majority of its flights from Terminal 3, the facilities are not suited for the high passenger volume. Many travelers cited difficulty finding seating and limited food options.

London Airports Mixed Results

London Luton Airport (LTN) was the lowest-ranked among the capital’s airports, earning a customer satisfaction score of 51%. Passengers highlighted the “confusing layout” and “overpriced food,” though the airport did achieve three stars for baggage handling.

A £2.4 billion expansion plan has been approved, which may bring improvements in the coming years.

Other London hubs such as Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Gatwick Airport (LGW) also reported underwhelming results. Heathrow’s terminals scored between 54% and 59%, while Gatwick North and South registered 57% and 55% respectively.

Despite the criticism, Heathrow remains the busiest in the UK, handling 83.9 million passengers in 2024—up from 66 million in 2021.

Regional Airports Earn Praise

At the top of the survey, Exeter Airport (EXT) secured first place with a score of 80%. The small regional hub serves approximately 500,000 passengers annually and received five stars for customer service, security queues, check-in, and baggage handling. Passengers praised the airport’s “stress-free and relaxed travel experience.”

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) followed closely with a 78% satisfaction score. Handling around 5 million passengers annually, it earned top marks for efficiency, security, and cleanliness. Travelers described the airport as “easy to navigate” with consistently smooth operations.

London City Airport (LCY), serving 3.5 million travelers each year, ranked third with a strong 76%. It was the only UK airport to score five stars across all queue categories, though it received lower marks for its toilets and limited retail options.

Bottom Line

The survey highlights a consistent divide between smaller regional airports and major hubs.

While large airports like Manchester, Heathrow, and Gatwick continue to struggle with congestion, costs, and service issues, smaller airports such as Exeter, Liverpool, and London City are delivering more efficient and passenger-friendly experiences.
