CAIRO- EgyptAir (MS) has filed with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to launch new nonstop flights from Cairo (CAI) to Los Angeles (LAX) and Chicago (ORD) in 2026.

The routes are set to begin in May and June 2026, subject to approval, marking a major step in the airline’s US expansion strategy and adding its longest flight yet.

EgyptAir New Flights to Two US Cities

The planned services will make Los Angeles and Chicago the fifth and sixth North American destinations for EgyptAir, joining New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Washington (IAD), and Toronto (YYZ).

The Los Angeles route will span 7,606 miles, becoming EgyptAir’s longest nonstop service, while the Chicago route will cover 6,149 miles.

Reported by OMAAT, this expansion reflects the airline’s commitment to strengthening its North American footprint and leveraging Star Alliance connectivity.

EgyptAir’s current long-haul fleet includes:

  • 5 Boeing 777-300ERs
  • 8 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners
  • 4 Airbus A330-200s
  • 4 Airbus A330-300s

The airline is also preparing to take delivery of Airbus A350-900s, which will significantly enhance capacity and efficiency for ultra-long-haul operations.

Industry expectations suggest that the Cairo–Los Angeles service may be operated with either the Boeing 787-9 or the new A350-900, both capable of handling extended-range missions.

Strategic Importance

Chicago (ORD)

Chicago is home to one of United Airlines’ largest hubs, offering strong Star Alliance connectivity. The new route is expected to perform well due to:

  • High demand for transatlantic travel to Africa and the Middle East.
  • Direct access to United’s extensive domestic and international network.
  • Appeal to both leisure and corporate travelers seeking one-stop connections via Cairo.

Los Angeles (LAX)

The Los Angeles service presents both opportunity and challenge. While demand from the US West Coast to Africa is limited compared to East Coast gateways, LAX offers:

  • Prestige is one of the world’s busiest airports.
  • Strategic branding, as a nonstop Cairo–Los Angeles service, would make LAX one of the few airports with nonstop flights to all six inhabited continents.
  • Access to a high-income market segment, though competition from Middle Eastern carriers such as Emirates (EK) and Qatar Airways (QR) remains strong.

EgyptAir previously operated flights to Los Angeles decades ago, making the 2026 launch both a resumption and expansion of its transpacific ambitions.

The reinstatement of this route underscores the airline’s commitment to reestablishing long-haul connections to the US West Coast while solidifying its transatlantic strategy.

Bottom Line

EgyptAir (MS) plans to launch nonstop flights from Cairo (CAI) to Chicago (ORD) in June 2026 and Los Angeles (LAX) in May 2026, pending DOT approval.

The Chicago route is expected to leverage strong Star Alliance connectivity at ORD, while the Los Angeles route, though longer and more challenging, marks a prestigious return for EgyptAir and positions LAX as a true global gateway.

With the upcoming arrival of Airbus A350-900s, EgyptAir is well-positioned to strengthen its long-haul operations and expand its US presence.
