ATLANTA- Delta Air Lines (DL) through its Delta Connection partner SkyWest Airlines (OO) will deploy Embraer E175 jets to serve Aspen (ASE), replacing the older CRJ-700 fleet. This upgrade enhances aircraft capacity, comfort, and operational efficiency to meet the demands of Aspen’s high elevation and ski season traffic.

This brings bigger cargo holds, modern cabins, and advanced avionics, transforming how travelers experience the final leg of their journey to one of North America’s premier mountain destinations.

Delta Deploys Embraer E175 Jets

Delta Connection flights to Aspen will transition from Bombardier CRJ-700s to Embraer E175 jets operated by SkyWest.

These newer jets are better suited to the physical and technical constraints of Aspen Airport, which has strict wingspan limitations and challenging terrain approaches.

The Embraer E175’s 94 foot wingspan fits within Aspen’s current 95 foot restriction, unlike the older CRJ-700, and offers improved reliability in severe mountain weather conditions.

The Embraer E175 delivers more than compatibility, it offers enhanced passenger comfort. Wider overhead bins and larger cabins accommodate full size carry-ons and ski equipment, reducing gate checking hassles.

The E175 also boasts quieter, under wing engines and upgraded avionics, enabling safer operations in Aspen’s demanding environment and lowering weather related disruptions.

Operational Improvements

Aspen’s runway layout and mountainous surroundings require aircraft and crew to meet stringent FAA certifications.

SkyWest remains the only regional operator with crews approved for Aspen’s steep approaches and “go-around” procedures.

The E175 improves on key performance metrics, including longer range, longer loiter capabilities, and the ability to operate under lower approach minimums during poor weather.

Fleet Strategy

This aircraft upgrade marks a broader fleet evolution for SkyWest. While the Embraer E175 jets initially appear on United Express routes to Aspen, Delta Connection flights are set to follow suit.

In parallel, SkyWest has already introduced Delta Connection, specific CRJ-550s, a redesigned, premium focused 50 seat variant of the CRJ-700, to other markets.

Moreover, SkyWest has ordered 16 new Embraer E175 jets for delivery beginning in 2027 under its Delta contract, with options for dozens more, underscoring a long term shift to Embraer jets across its regional operations.

Commitment to Ski Travelers

Delta Air Lines (DL) continues to prioritize ski destinations, with Aspen (ASE) as a key focus. The introduction of Embraer E175 jets on Delta Connection routes from Atlanta and Los Angeles reflects Delta’s broader strategy to enhance service to top US ski destinations.

This fleet upgrade, operated by SkyWest Airlines, underscores Delta’s dedication to providing a seamless and premium travel experience for passengers chasing powder, après-ski, or Aspen’s breathtaking scenery.
